On our doorstep
Perched above a secluded beach, bang on the South West Coast Path and surrounded by the stunning scenery of the Lizard Peninsula, there’s plenty to see and do around the Polurrian Bay Hotel. Much of which you don’t even need to start the car to experience.
From surfing to horse riding, there’s a wealth of activities for families. Our own Polurrian Cove is ideal for bodyboarding, rock-pooling and building sandcastles; and we’ve got plenty of beach gear you can borrow for your seaside adventures. If you want to experience the thrills and spills of surfing proper, champion surfer Dan Joel runs a surf school on neighbouring Poldhu Cove – a 20-minute walk or 5-minute drive from the hotel.
With the South West Coast Path at the end of the hotel garden, you don’t need a car to strike out and see the spectacular coastal scenery of the Lizard Peninsula. Simply turn right (past the monument marking where Marconi sent the first transatlantic message in 1901) to Poldhu Cove, or left to Mullion Cove, made famous in the 2014 storms. You can cast off from this idyllic fishing harbour and witness the coastline from the sea on a kayaking or coasteering trip with Lizard Adventure.
Further afield you’ll find the pearly sands of Kynance Cove, before reaching the UK’s most southerly point at the tip of the Lizard. Here, as well as exploring the rugged scenery, enjoy a visit to the Lizard Lighthouse and Heritage Centre, where you can climb the lighthouse tower, sound a foghorn, track ships and even build your own lighthouse with soft-play bricks. The Lizard village is also home to Ann’s Pasties; – alleged to sell some of the finest pasties in the county.
Although the coast hogs the spotlight, there’s plenty to do aside from beach life. Inland, you can gorge on Cornish ice cream and meet the animals at Roskilly’s Farm, or ride a Segway around Goonhilly Satellite Station, where the iconic satellite dishes loom over miles of heathland. If you have a penchant for arts and crafts, head to the artisan shops and chocolate factory at nearby Mullion Meadows.
