We’re delighted to announce the completion of an extraordinary community project that perfectly demonstrates the spirit of collaboration and dedication to our beautiful Cornish coastline. Hotel Polurrian is immensely proud to have played a key role in facilitating the complete refurbishment of the former Lifeguard Building at Polurrian Cove, breathing fresh life into what was once a derelict structure.
A Vision Realised Through Partnership
Under the leadership of Hotel owner Andrew Long, we’ve worked closely with dedicated local community groups to establish a Charitable Trust that has now become the freehold owner of this important coastal building. This remarkable transformation has been made possible through the collaborative efforts of:
- Mullion Surf Lifesaving Club (MSLSC) – whose dedication to water safety has been unwavering despite challenging circumstances
- RNLI – continuing their vital lifesaving mission along our coastline
- Friends of Polurrian Cove – championing the preservation and enhancement of this special place
From Derelict to Dynamic: A £160,000 Investment in Community
The Trust successfully acquired the building from Cornwall Council for the symbolic sum of £1, but the real investment came through the community’s commitment to excellence. Approximately £160,000 has been invested in creating first-class facilities that will serve both our local heroes and beach visitors for years to come.
The newly refurbished building now provides:
For Our Water Safety Champions:
- A proper clubhouse for the Mullion Surf Lifesaving Club, giving them a permanent home after nearly a decade of operating from a garage
- Enhanced facilities for the RNLI to support their crucial lifesaving operations
For All Beach Users:
- Fully refitted public WCs
- Modern beach showers
- High-quality facilities that complement the natural beauty of Polurrian Cove
Overcoming a Decade of Challenges
This project holds special significance for the Mullion Surf Lifesaving Club, who have shown remarkable resilience and dedication since 2014. When a severe storm damaged their original lifeguard hut nearly ten years ago, the club didn’t give up on their mission to keep our waters safe. Instead, they continued their vital work from a garage, demonstrating the kind of community spirit that makes Cornwall so special.
Today, they finally have the proper facilities they deserve – a fitting home for their life-saving work and a testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together.
A Model for Community-Led Conservation
This project represents more than just a building renovation; it’s a blueprint for how hotels, local businesses, community groups, and volunteers can work together to preserve and enhance our coastal heritage. At Hotel Polurrian, we believe that being part of this community means taking an active role in its future.
The transformation of the Lifeguard Building demonstrates that with vision, collaboration, and commitment, even the most challenging projects can become reality. We’re honoured to have facilitated this partnership and to see the positive impact it will have on both locals and visitors to our stunning cove.
Looking Forward
As these exceptional new facilities become available to the public, we invite everyone to appreciate not just the modern amenities, but the community spirit that made them possible. The next time you visit Polurrian Cove, you’ll be experiencing the fruits of true local collaboration – where a hotel, community groups, and volunteers united to create something special.
The waves may have damaged the original building, but they couldn’t wash away the determination of our community. Today, Polurrian Cove stands stronger than ever, ready to welcome visitors while keeping them safe through the dedicated work of our surf lifesavers and RNLI volunteers.
At Hotel Polurrian, we’re not just a place to stay – we’re part of the fabric of this incredible coastal community. This project exemplifies our commitment to supporting the people and places that make Mullion and the surrounding area so extraordinary.
