A Review by Rosie Gibson

Perched high on the cliff tops, overlooking one of the most beautiful areas of Cornwall, this funky hotel offers everything you could possibly wish for in the most memorable stay.

Open all year around, this newly refurbished hotel is perfect for weeks of fun-filled activities and moments of relaxation. Myself and my partner were kindly invited down to the Polurrian hotel to stay for a night and were amazed at the abundance of things you could do here. Not only is it located in one of the most beautiful areas of Cornwall, with gorgeous cliff walks, hidden coves and close to some of the county’s top tourist hot-spots like Kynance Cove, it’s also a hub of activity where you can enjoy anything from spa treatments to a game of tennis. Our only wish was that we could have stayed longer.

When we first arrived we decided to go for a walk with my dad and dog to check out the surrounding area and secluded beach, just a 5 minute walk from the hotel. It’s such a beautiful place so we were super surprised to find it practically empty, aside from a some horse riders from an equestrian centre nearby.

Before heading into the hotel, we walked further along the cliff towards Poldu Cove, to check out the rest of the gorgeous scenery and sea views. It’s amazing to step out of the hotel to be greeted by such a diverse coastline to explore. The hotel is also dog friendly so it’s a fantastic area to stay and take your dog on some unforgettable walks around the beautiful Lizard Peninsula.

Once we’d said goodbye to my dad and dog and headed back to the hotel, we were shown to our lovely sea-view double room with a chair for sitting by the window and watching the world go by. At one point we think we even spotted a pod of dolphins in the bay. It’s perfect for a couples getaway and some rooms even have the option to include an extra bed or cot.

The room had a very modern feel to it and the bed was so comfy that I may even go as far to say it gave me the most comfiest sleep I’ve ever had in my life. They also supply Elemenis products in the bathroom to use during your stay, which smelt super lovely. The same products are used for their spa treatments and are available to buy at the hotel. Complimentary Cornish Brew tea and coffee are also supplied in the rooms which is perfect for the mornings to curl up with a cuppa by the window while looking out at the gorgeous ocean.

If you wanted to stay at the hotel with large families or groups of people the Polurrian has got you covered! We were shown around one of the self-catered villas that sleep groups of six people and is very homely and modern. All villas have underfloor heating so they are warm and cosy, even in the winter months. During the summer months groups can spend time in the outdoors gathered around the BBQ and fire pit in the sheltered garden.

All guests get full access to the health club, restaurants, Vista Lounge and swimming pools. I don’t know about you but I love a hotel with a good pool, and the Polurrian not only has one but TWO pools. One is indoors with a spa pool jacuzzi next to it, while the other is outside overlooking the sea – and yes it is heated.  In the health club, where the indoor pool is located, they also have a gym and spa for guests to try out and use.

Indoors the hotel has so many different rooms guests can chill out in and spend some quality family time. The main room, the Vista Lounge, is another one overlooking the sea where the hotel hosts many events such as music nights and even private weddings. It has a retro feel to it with lots of brightly coloured chairs, some of which are old bumper cars. They even have a record player, old records and electric guitar displayed which makes this room feel like a super lively and fun environment.

They also have a rum special bar in this room that offers 27 different types as well as all sorts of local Cornish beers, wines and spirits. In the evenings the lights are dropped down low creating a nice mood for those who want to dance late into the night.

Other recreational rooms are also dotted around hotel where guests can do fun activities together like watch a film on a big TV, play pool, board games and even table tennis. Me and my boyfriend really enjoyed playing pool together in the evening instead of the usual and just watching Netflix together. If you’d rather chill out and read a good book however they have areas for this too including a big selection of books to choose from.

If that wasn’t enough, the hotel also offers different activities throughout the year including yoga classes every Thursday’s and Saturday’s, plus things like sea kayaking, surfing, beach cleans, coasteering and other activities on certain dates (go ahead and check out the website here to find out more about these activities if you’re interested).

Aside from that there are lots of other things they offer that you can do at your own leisure such as play a game tennis. There’s even a giant game of outdoors chess, football goals and a play park to keep children occupied for hours.

As well as endless fun for all the family the hotel also cooks amazing locally sourced food using a unique wood-fired oven. We decided to go along to their restaurant to try out their wood-fired pizzas and they tasted delicious – just like authentic Italian pizzas. I had the classic mozzarella and tomato pizza while my boyfriend had the mushroom and blue cheese. We were also told by a lovely staff member that they also do a biscoff and peanut dessert pizza which I really wanted to try but was super full after our meal.

All of the staff at the hotel were incredibly friendly and happy to answer any questions we had. I cannot thank them all enough for providing such great hospitality throughout our stay and making the hotel feel like home away from home to us.

I highly recommend anyone who loves lots of things to do on their holidays to check out the Polurrian hotel. Not only is it dog friendly, it also offers lots of activities for families and couples alike to do together for the most memorable stay. Plus, it’s located in one of the best areas of Cornwall, the Lizard Penisula, where the waters are crystal clear and the coastline is gorgeous. After our stay we went to check out Carrag-Luz ‘Love Rock’ (5 minute walk from the hotel), Mullion Cove (15 minute walk) and Kynance Cove (20 minute drive). Blog post on these places coming soon but in the meantime here’s a sneak peak…
